When AI is being discussed by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, you know it’s reached that stage where politicians are taking it seriously. This is generally the point where bluff, bluster and political sound-bites start drowning out facts.

It’s worth noting some of the recent developments: 

• White House Executive Order: The Biden administration has released an executive order to try to ensure AI is “safe, secure, and trustworthy”
• Bletchley Declaration: The UK, US, EU, Australia and China has issued a declaration that all “actors” in the AI space need to identify and address the risks of AI.
• Terminator robots will chase you. Elon Musk, ever a controversial figure, has warned that humanoid robots could chase you anywhere. He also said, if harnessed correctly, AI will mean nobody needs to work unless they want to.
• Scarlett Johansson takes legal action. As deep fakes become easier with the use of AI, we will see more of them. Scarlett Johansson is objecting to the unauthorised use of her likeness in an advertising campaign. Tom Hanks has also recently called out this behaviour.
• AI could have saved mother’s life: Shadow Science secretary, Peter Kyle said AI scans could have detected earlier his mother’s lung cancer which could have saved her life.
